Induction coil or ignition coil , mechanical part used to ignite the air-fuel mixture compressed in the cylinder in gasoline engines . The ignition coil consists of two windings with common ends. 100-150 turns of 0.7-1.0 mm copper wire are used in the primary winding . The secondary winding, which provides high voltage output, is wound with 100,000 turns of very thin copper wire and both coils are closed by placing them in a cylinder filled with transformer oil , which provides insulation, on a magnetic core .
